Welcome to Freemansburg Borough
Freemansburg Borough is a close-knit community covering less than one square mile in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The town is named after Jacob Freeman, the grandson of Richard Freeman, who settled in the area in the 1700s. The land that would become Freemansburg was originally granted by William Penn to Mr. Whistler, who later transferred the title to Jacob Freeman. Jacob began selling lots, and due to his popularity and outgoing nature, the town came to bear his name.
Freemansburg was officially incorporated as a borough on January 24, 1856. The first election of borough officials took place in March of that year. The newly formed borough council adopted its governing rules from the Borough of Easton (which was itself not yet a city at the time).
In its early years, Freemansburg was home to approximately 1,200 residents, along with several churches, three hotels, five stores, a grist mill, a distillery, and two boatyards. As of the 2025 U.S. Census, the population has grown to 2,910.
